Kielian was an assistant public defender on a full-time basis from 1976 through 1978, then worked part-time for the office from 1979 until 1988 while he was also a partner in the firm Gray, Kleczek & Kielian. “I thought it was a good fit for me,” Kielian said of his decision to apply for the job. “I will be able to use my experience to mentor the younger attorneys in the Public Defender’s Office.” A search for a new defender began in late October after Astrella said he would leave the job. He has served as the county public defender since 2008. Astrella’s announcement came a year after he was named as a defendant in a federal sexual harassment lawsuit filed by two female assistant public defenders.
